Blog #1: Drosophila Melanogaster

COMMENTS ARE NOW CLOSED ON THIS POST. TO TURN THIS POST IN LATE, PLEASE ANSWER THE QUESTION ON A SHEET OF PAPER AND TURN IT IN TO MRS. RAWSON.

Today in class, we watched a video about the fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster). Over the next nine weeks, you will get very familiar with these organisms as we breed flies with different traits and observe their offspring.

For this blog, answer the following question in at least 3 complete sentences:

Why do scientists use Drosophila melanogaster for their research, and what types of questions or problems are these organisms being used to answer?

This blog assignment is due Monday, January 12.

Scientist uses Drosophila Melanogaster for their research because these organisms have the same type of DNA as humans, resulting in an easy research project. Also, while it may take 9 months for a human to reproduce, it takes Drosophila Melanogaster only a few days (or about a week or so). These organisms are being used to answer questions such as genes, how do the genes affect one another. They also are trying to use the organisms to help them find a cure to Alzheimer’s. Scientist is trying to make a drug or medicine that will help people remember more.

    D. Melanogaster are used because it is easier to see their changes in behavior and they produce faster. These flies are used to answer the question about Altheimer diesease and if there is a cure. Also they are answering weather the personalitiy and looks of the parents, affect their offspring.

I think that they use this 4 research because:
    1. it is easy to hold and handle
    2. its not harming
    3. they get better data.

People may ask how can you cure people with memory problems. Well to scientists its very simple they put all the fruit flies into a tube and they vacuumed in a licorice smell and whenever they went to it they got shocked. The next time they vacuumed in a smeel of smelly shoes in and they didnt get shocked. The next time they vacuumed both in and the all went to the one that didnt shock so they remembered what didnt shock them

I believe that scientist are gathering information relating to memory. they believe that fruit flies have sum kind of chemical that could come in handy to humans in the future. a problem about this is that the research or results could end up being used for the wrong reasons

Scientist use Drosophila as a genetic model to study human diseases because:
    • The cultures don’t require much equipment and storage space and the cost is low.
    • It is small, easy to grow, and has a short generation time.
    • The females lay many eggs in a lifetime.
    • Males and females are easily told apart, helping with genetic studies.
    • They have only four pairs of chromosomes with visible genetic markers.
These organisms help answer questions in genetics, physiology, and life history evolution.

I think it is because fruit flies and people have genes in common They tell what kind of diseases can be curef by altering the dna of other people or giving them a special drug. Since the genes a are similar wat happens with the flies would probably happen to us

I think they use Drosophila malanogaster because they want to absorb things about them like how they breed,or there shape and size. Then i think they would like to find things that is wrong with them to find a cure for it and save them for dying. If i had to ask a question it would be what was there history in life since they live only for two weeks? Also if i was a person who could answer that question i would say they live less because when they dont have the correct care they die and also if you keep them in a container you have to give them food and many other flies to breed and go through the five stages.

I think scientists use drosophila melanogaster because it sounds more professional. The questions that are being answered with these fly’s are. They are trying to find a cure to Alzheimer’s disease. Scientists are now conducting tests on fly’s to test there memory. Also they think if they can make you have a memory they can take away your memory to. So scientists would like to know if they can take a piece of your memory that was crucial so that you don’t have to live with it for the rest of your life.

Scientist use Drosophila melanogaster for their research because their not that expensive and have similar genetics as humans. Their life line is short and their easy to take care. One question the fruit flies are being used for is to answer is if they are some how related to us humans, because of their genetics. Another question is that if the flies can memorizes certain things like their past, or if they have any memory at all. One question I have is that if flies can be smart enough to finish a maze two times in-a-row(but the second time would be much faster), so I would actually have proof that flies have excellent memory like humans. Also the life cycle of a fruit fly is somehow similar to the human life cycle but theirs is shorter.

They are being used to find a cure for people who have Alzheimer’s Disease. They have a short life span which is good because scientists can see many generations in a short time period. This allows scientist to see the affects of changes to the fly’s genes over many lifetimes to see how the gene is formed which helps memory gain.

Scientists have answered many questions but there are more and the fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) is a key to answering many more questions. Scientists are using Drosophila melanogaster to answer questions about genetics. But why use fruit flies to study our genes? Fruit flies actually have a very similar genetic pattern to ours so people can do experiments on these cheap, easy to handle, orginisms and still have somewhat of an idea of what our genes are like. For example, if people are trying to find a cure for a sickness, you can experiment on fruit flies to find the cure. That is what makes Drosophila melanogaster perfect for scientists to research.

One last reason is that there are a lot of them in life so the people studying them can easily get there hands on a number of them. The reason scientists use D. Melanogaster is beause they study the genes of the fly’s to see what genes do what so we can use that to our advantage. The fly’s are studied because there genetics are much like our own, except ours are just a bit more complicated. Scientists currently are studying the fly’s genetics to figure out how to stop long term memory or help to stop it. In the video we saw the scientists turned off the fly’s memory gene, and obsevred what happened compare to what the fly’s memory gene was always on. a regular fly took ten times to remember something but the flys with the gene always turned on took 1 try.

Their small and easy to use especially for experimenting. From what I noticed their easily to handle and they don’t bite. These mysterious fruit flies love rotten fruits of any kind.

the flies are use to study how they make different babies and how they are the same as their grandparents. Drosophila melanogaster are flies that scientist study, they study this tipe of fly because they are easy to work with. the flies wont harm you in any way, they are easy to put to sleep and they can look at them really close so they can study them.

These flies are being used to cure this illness that elders get ,They forget their memmories. Scientests are trying to find a cure to bring there memories back. These flies are used to invistagate on how genetics work.

The scientist don’t what to study on other people and it hard to combience someone to study them. The Drosophila melanogaster is easy to study and it cost less than any other animals. the Drosophila melanogaster has a short time of a life cycle and whe can study them in 14 days.

Scientist’s ude D. Melanogaster’s to reasearch on them because they’re cheap and they don’t need a whole lot of attention to live. They are being used to answer some scientific questions.

The scientists use the fruit fly because they are quick at reproducing. I say that because it takes them no longer than two weeks to reproduce and die for generations. We are finding the mutations and what are the generations like and how are they changing.

    1. Because, Drosophila melanogasters past down genes from the past flies. Like humans do.

    2. How genes are past down from one set of familys to another.

Scientist use Drosophila Melenogaster for their research because they have a short life span and they breed and produce offspring a lot. One way the scientist are using these organisms to try to find a way to cure alzheimers. Another way is to learn about how genes are passed on from parents to offspring.

scienntists use Drosophila melanogaster because they are small and easy to handle, and u can put them to sleep with acemical. This living organizam is used to study the genetics and its not easy to do it in a human body so they tdo it with a fly(Drosophila melanogaster ).

They use Drosophila melanogaster to study, becuses thay are cheap. Also easy to mantane. The Drosophila melanogaster is being studyed becuses thay are tring to find a cure for alsimers in old people. Thay are using ther memory geans to find a drug that can make your memory better. Also a drug that can make you forget bad memorys.

Drosophila Melanogaster is being used for trying to find the cure for ashimer. Scientist have discover that fruit flys (Drosophila melanogaster) have a gene that controls the fruit fly’s memory. If the scientist could find the gene that controls a person’s memory. scientist could probibly find a cure for ashimer.
